The Advanced Leadership workshop prepares doctoral candidates to qualify for key positions within industry, government or non-profit organizations. The participants worked on their leadership competences and skills and got an introduction to leadership in an increasingly complex and interconnected world. What about their experience?

Het zijn er duizenden.” Promovendus Paul Denissen geeft een rondleiding door het lab van Novel Aerospace Materials, een onderzoeksgroep die zijn naam eer aandoet. De ‘huisdieren’ waar Denissen het over heeft, zijn diatomeeën (of kiezelwieren), een familie van eencellige algen. De promovendus pakt een glazen bakje met troebel zeewater van de vensterbank. Hij en zijn begeleider, universitair hoofddocent Santiago Garcia, gebruiken de algen om een revolutionair nieuw type roestwerende coatings te maken.
Chroom-6 vormt grote gevaren voor de gezondheid, dus zoeken wetenschappers hard naar alternatieven. Onderzoekers aan de TU Delft ontwikkelden een heel nieuwe oplossing op basis van algenskeletten.De onrust rondom chroom-6 lijkt maar niet te gaan liggen. Een onafhankelijke commissie concludeerde onlangs dat onder andere de gemeente Tilburg en de NS verantwoordelijk zijn voor de schade die werknemers opliepen bij het restaureren van oude treinen. De chroom-6 die op deze treinen zat, is namelijk kankerverwekkend en kan het DNA aantasten.
TU Delft researchers are developing new coatings with unicellular algae, that may prevent corrosion in aluminium airplane structures.
“And here are our pets. Thousands of them.” PhD researcher Paul Denissen is giving a tour through the Novel Aerospace Materials group’s lab, a group that lives up to its name. The ‘pets’ Denissen is referring to are diatoms, a group of unicellular algae. The PhD researcher picks up a little glass container with murky sea water from the windowsill. He and his supervisor, Associate Professor Santiago Garcia, are using the algae to create a revolutionary new kind of corrosion protective coatings.
Because of its toxicity, the European Commission has forbidden the use of chromium-6,” says Paul Denissen, PhD researcher in the Novel Aerospace Materials group at the faculty of Aerospace Engineering. “Use of chromium-6 is only still tolerated in situations where good alternatives are lacking, for example to protect airplanes against corrosion.”
What seemed like a wild idea in 2014, using the external skeletons of algae to prevent corrosion, has now been shown to provide long term protection of aluminium used in airplanes. In a few years’ time, it may provide a safe and environmentally-friendly replacement for the use of chromium-6.
De microscopisch kleine skeletten van kiezelwieren lijken geschikt om stoffen in op te slaan die corrosie remmen. Verwerkt in een coating kunnen de corrosieremmers een alternatief zijn voor het vaak gebruikte, maar kankerverwekkende chroom-6. Die stoffen komen dan langzaam vrij via de poriën en beschermen zo het metaal dat onder de coating zit.
Nieuwe meetmethode koppelt optische en elektrochemische technieken
Hoe kun je corrosieprocessen real time volgen met een betrouwbaar systeem waarmee je coatings en de prestaties ervan goed kunt meten en met elkaar vergelijken? Hoe voorkom je interpretatieverschillen, zoals die bijvoorbeeld bij zoutsproeitesten regelmatig optreden wanneer twee of meer personen naar hetzelfde kijken? Hoe kun je bij alternatieven voor Chroom VI snel inzicht krijgen in hoe de coating reageert op (grote) beschadigingen?
The European Technical Coatings Congress (ETCC) 2018 was organised in the Beurs van Berlage in Amsterdam June 26-29, 2018. The meeting was for one time combined with the annual CoSi meeting, which is normally held in Noordwijk. The theme of this congress was “Towards a Bright Future, New Coatings Technologies”. Several Dutch companies and Universities contributed to this congress. In total 110 lectures and a big number of posters have been presented.
Because only a limited number of NVVT members were able to attend this congress in Amsterdam the NVVT would like to offer a number of these companies and universities the possibility to present their contributions for a broader (NVVT) audience.
The EUROCORR Young Scientist Grant is an award founded and presented by the EFC since 2016. Its objective is to stimulate interaction and collaboration within the international corrosion community, by providing financial support to junior corrosionists to enable them to visit and interact with other corrosionists at their home institute abroad and to discuss research issues of mutual concern relevant to the field. A special EUROCORR Young Scientist Grant Selection Committee makes the grant selection on the basis of brief proposals submitted.
